Monday Report: Disney and Pixar continue to ride high with Inside Out 2 as its sophomore showing exceled above even the most optimistic of expectations heading into the weekend, pulling a reported $101 million (updated as of Monday morning).

Previous forecasts had been for around $80 million or more, which would have already positioned the film in “excellent hold” territory on par with past summer Pixar tentpoles. The final result, however, indicates word of mouth and a lack of direct competition helped push it above and beyond with just a 34 percent decline from its stellar $154.2 million domestic first frame a week ago.

It is the best second weekend hold of all time for any film that opened over $150 million in its first weekend, passing Star Wars: The Force Awakens (a 40 percent decline over Christmas weekend in 2015).

All-time, here’s how this weekend’s performance stacks up against the best second weekends in history:

  • Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($149.2 million)
  • Avengers: Endgame ($147.4 million)
  • Avengers: Infinity War ($114.8 million)
  • Black Panther ($111.7 million)
  • Jurassic World ($106.6 million)
  • The Avengers ($103.1 million)
  • Inside Out 2 ($101 million)
  • Barbie ($93 million)
  • The Super Mario Bros. Movie ($92.4 million)
  • Beauty and the Beast (2017) ($90.4 million)

Among animated releases of all brands, it’s a whole new record for the Pixar juggernaut:

  • Inside Out 2 ($101 million)
  • The Super Mario Bros. Movie ($92.4 million)
  • Frozen II ($86 million)
  • Incredibles 2 ($80.4 million)
  • The Lion King (2019) ($76.6 million)*
  • Finding Dory ($73 million)

* = Disney does not consider 2019’s remake of The Lion King an animated film, but it’s included here for the purpose of context and many outside opinions that it does fall into the photo-realistic animation category.

With $355.2 million in North America, Inside Out 2 has now surpassed Dune: Part Two as the top domestic release of 2024 so far, that film having earned $282.1 million.

In the Pixar echelon, Inside Out 2 currently ranks 7th out of 25 traditional theatrical releases (excluding straight-to-streaming titles). That list looks like this currently, which the film will continue to climb in quick fashion:

  • Incredibles 2 ($608.6 million)
  • Finding Dory ($486.3 million)
  • Toy Story 4 ($434 million)
  • Toy Story 3 ($415 million)
  • Finding Nemo ($380.5 million)
  • Inside Out ($356.5 million)
  • Inside Out 2 ($355.2 million)
  • Up ($293 million)
  • Monsters, Inc. ($290.2 million)
  • Monsters University ($268.5 million)

Globally, Inside Out 2 is on a similar blockbuster path with $724.4 million accumulated through Sunday, $369.2 million of which comes from international markets.

The film has surpassed Dune: Part Two as the top grossing global release of 2024 so far. The Denis Villeneuve-helmed Warner Bros. sequel finished its worldwide box office run with $711.8 million). Internationally, Inside Out 2 is third among 2024 releases and will soon pass Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire ($371.3 million).
