A host of updates this weekend, mostly covered in the chart below. We’re also extending back to a six-week outlook.

Key Tracking Factors & Rationale:

  • Black Phone 2 is positioned to capitalize on Halloween and spooky season with a timely mid-October launch, reuniting writer/director Scott Derrickson with stars Ethan Hawke and Mason Thames.
    • The first film was a sleeper hit success story during the early days of post-COVID era theatrical recovery, earning $90.1 million domestically and $161.4 million globally in summer 2022.
    • Early trends for the sequel indicate healthy interest among core young audiences, comparable to last year’s Smile 2, though it should be cautioned that Blumhouse and various other horror franchises have historically seen diminishing returns with sequels. Still, post-release competition is minimal with a strong runway into November.
  • Early festival reviews for Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere are very encouraging and could signal a leggy box office run into award season.
    • Jeremy Allen White’s budding star appeal will be an anchor for marketing as early observations position appeal and tracking for the film to potentially mirror A Complete Unknown.
    • Turnout will lean mostly on older moviegoers and Bruce Springsteen fans, the former of which being an audience whose cinema-attending habits have diminished in recent years, so word of mouth will be key to watch for this theatrical event.
  • Other updates and additions to the public chart are included below for titles such as Good Fortune, Regretting YouGabby’s DollhouseA Big Bold Beautiful Journey, and Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc.
