6-Week Box Office Tracking & Forecasts: HIM ($20M+), A BIG BOLD BEAUTIFUL JOURNEY, and Angel’s THE SENIOR

The full version of this report appears in Box Office Theory’s Substack newsletter.

This week’s public report highlights of trio releases slated for September 19, plus brief updates on other upcoming titles.

Key Tracking Factors & Rationale:

  • Him is already generating intrigue in early marketing awareness with the horror-sports genre crossover featuring a buzzy performance from Marlon Wayans and Jordan Peele’s Monkeypaw Productions producing role. Depending on what crowd-pleasing twists and turns transpire, the Universal film has potential to benefit from the synergy of football and Halloween seasons in late September and October. Driving demographics are likely to be men over and under 25. The film will share an opening weekend IMAX footprint with its fellow studio’s 30th anniversary re-issue of Apollo 13.
  • A Big Bold Beautiful Journey will counter with an adult female-driven fantasy dramedy led by Margot Robbie and Colin Farrell. High concept features like this can be hit or miss (see the likes of Don’t Worry Darling and Here, among others, in the post-COVID theatrical era), but early trailer view trends for the Sony pic are encouraging and there’s very little direct competition on the fall slate.
  • Angel Studios will counter Him in its own way with a feel-good, family-friendly sports drama of their own, The Senior. As usual with Angel releases, the goal is to attract core faith- and values-driven audiences and supporters of the studio with hopes of expanding their reach with mainstream moviegoers.
  • With an unconfirmed location count for next week, forecasts for Americana have been temporarily removed.
  • Disney announced the filmed version of Hamilton‘s Broadway play will hit cinemas on post-Labor Day weekend alongside Warner Bros.’ The Conjuring: Last Rites. Early pre-sales for the musical blockbuster are very healthy, but we’ll assess more and offer up possible projections at a later date.
